How to auto-redirect HTTP to HTTPS (SSL)

If you need to auto redirect all request from http to https (SSL) in Apache, add the following code to the top level .htaccess file.

RewriteEngine On

RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off

RewriteRule (.*) https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI}

Package Hold in Debian

When need a package put it on hold in upgrade of Debian, We can use
echo "package hold" | dpkg --set-selections

Eg. If you want to hold upgrade skype in upgrade
$ echo "skype hold" | sudo dpkg --set-selections

Then it will not upgrade when you do upgrade. When you need to upgrade the package again, use
$ echo "skype install" | sudo dpkg --set-selections

Ubuntu Natty (11.04) AppMenu

Next Ubuntu release is Natty and it will be delivered in April 2011 on the normal six-month Ubuntu cycle. I installed the beta release in my Eee PC. After installed I googled how to disable the AppMenu (Global Menu). All search results was bit complicated. So I am writing here how to do it easily.

Open a terminal
Type the following command in single line
sudo mv /usr/lib/indicators/5/libappmenu.so /usr/lib/indicators/5/libappmenu.so.old
Restart the computer

My first mobile phone was Nokia 1100 in 2006. Then I owned a Nokia 6610i. Unfortunately I lost it. So the third phone was Nokia 3120 Classic. After using three Noika phones I bought a HTC Kaiser 8925 last week via ebay. It was locked to At&T network. So my first job was unlock it. After spending two nights I could do it.

Today I am participating a workshop on e-Learning 2.0 : Embarking Novel Ways of Learning Using Web 2.0 at University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC) and the resource person is Prof. San Murugesan.

SigmaTel STIr4200 & Nokia 6610i phone
I have a SigmaTel STIr 4200 IRDA/USB Dongle and a Nokia 6610i phone. with IR support. Following configurations are used to connect my phone to PC through Infrared.

IRDA/USB Dongle - SigmaTel STIr 4200
OS - Windows XP, Service pack 2
Nokia PC suit 6.82.22.0

Most of time IR connection disconnected suddenly after Nokia PC suit detecting my phone. So I did following settings in Device Manager

Device Manager --> Infra devices --> USB IrDA Adapter
Properties --> Advanced

Infrared transceiver type = Vishay 6101E (Default)
Min. Turn-around Time = 0.5 ms
Speed Enable = 4000000 (Default)

Now it is working propriety.
